18. What is Planning and Control?
Various planning and control tools and processes are available to the project
manager and depending on the size of the project depends whether all of them
are used. Tools and processes include project planning, Gantt Charts, critical
path, responsibility assignment matrix and added value analysis.
To ensure the successful delivery project managers place heavy emphasis on
planning and control. Planning is a big part of managing the execution of the
project and requires constant reworking to ensure tasks and the plan is in
sync. The plan provides a project baseline that allows progress to be
scheduled, monitored, risks be identifying and reporting against. Although
these tools will not do the work for you they help to map out the project
route, the dependencies, critical path and the resources. It is the
responsibility of the project manager to make it happen.
